Module 01 — Foundation

What is Artificial
Intelligence?

Before you can use AI like a pro, you need to understand what it actually is. Not the sci-fi version — the real thing. Let's build your mental model from scratch.

02
🧠
Artificial Intelligence
Software that can do things which normally require human intelligence — recognising images, understanding speech, making decisions.
📊
Machine Learning
A type of AI that learns from examples, rather than being given step-by-step rules. Show it 1 million cat photos and it learns what a cat looks like.
🕸️
Neural Network
The architecture that powers most modern AI — inspired by how neurons connect in a brain, but made of maths and code, not biology.
💬
Large Language Model (LLM)
An AI trained on billions of words of text. It learns patterns of language so well it can write, reason, code, and converse. Claude and GPT are LLMs.
🎯
Training Data
The examples an AI learns from. The quality and quantity of training data is the single biggest factor in how good an AI becomes.
⚙️
Parameters / Weights
The millions (or billions) of numbers inside an AI model that store what it has learned. GPT-4 has around 1.8 trillion parameters.
🤖
AI Agent
An AI that doesn't just answer questions — it takes actions, uses tools, browses the web, and completes multi-step tasks autonomously.
💡
Prompt
The input you give an AI — your question, instruction, or context. Knowing how to write a great prompt is the most valuable skill you'll learn.

👍 The Recommendation Engine
Rate items — watch AI learn your taste and recommend more
✓ Done

Rate each item below. After all ratings, the AI predicts what you'll enjoy next — exactly like Netflix, Spotify, and TikTok. Switch category to try different types!

🧠 What's the Rule?
The AI has a secret rule — test things and figure out what it is
✓ Done

I'm thinking of a secret rule. Tap items to test them — I'll say yes or no. Once you think you know it, make your guess! Switch challenge to try a different rule.

5. Mini Project — Build Your AI Glossary
Define 8 AI terms in your own words. Your definitions, not copied ones
+50 XP
05

The best way to test if you really understand something is to explain it in your own words — not copy a definition. Write what each term means to you. There's no wrong answer as long as you're being genuine.

Coming in Module 5 — AI Risks & Safety
Understanding AI risks is just as important as understanding its capabilities.
Unlocks later

AI can be genuinely dangerous when misused — understanding the risks is just as important as understanding the capabilities. In Module 5 you'll cover:

Hallucination — why AI confidently lies, and how to catch it
Deepfakes — AI-generated images, audio and video used to deceive
Bias in AI — how training data makes AI unfair to certain groups
Privacy — what AI companies know about you and how they use it
The ethics debate — you'll argue both sides of real AI dilemmas

// Most people only think about what AI can do — not what it shouldn't do. Module 5 changes that.
